the bay of islands is located at the top of NZ. my school and 2 other schools organised a 3-day-trip for the international students to it.
at 9.30am on the 18th november the 10 students taking part of our school and 2 teachers got picked up by the coach. It was a long bus ride to our destination which i spend with talking german with anna, who sat next to me. on the way we came through warkworth, wellsford and whangarei.
we visited the kaiwiti glow worm caves, which was just amazing. unfortunately cameras were not allowed. after another long bus ride we reached our destination at about 4.30pm: the bay of islands holiday park. it was a normal camping site (facilities like a playground and pool table provided;-)) where we slept in 6 bed cabins. for dinner we had lasagne, salad and brownies. when it got dark we started playing frisbee. there was a lamp on our frisbee so it looked pretty amazing.
the next day i got up very early to have a shower. breakfast was at 6.30 and at 7.15 we left on the bus. the bus driver told us that this ‘bus’ was not really a ‘bus’. it was a truck which they transformed into a bus:-D. on that ‘bus’ we drove further north. the landscape was very beautiful there: rainforest, smooth hills with very green gras and beaches. we had a short walk in a kauri forest with very big trees. for lunch we stopped at a special place to have a buffet. then we got to cape reinga, which is the top point of the north island, where the pacific ocean and the tasman sea meet. it was very windy up there;-)
finally we got to know why we were sitting on a transformed truck. the ‘bus’ drove through a river bed to get us to the sandboarding. when you looked out of the window on the right side, you could think that you were in the desert. huge sanddunes rose right next to the river bed.
sandboarding was fun but climbing up the sanddunes was very exhausting;-). we ‘boarded’ down the sanddune right next to the river bed, so when you got so far, the last part was boarding on the water and wet sand. of course i was one of the 3 people who fell from the board in the river bed and got wet and very sandy.
then the bus continued driving through the river bed and we got to the 90 miles beach. we took lots of photos on that beach. there was also one of the ‘holes in the rock’. if it had been low tide (ebbe), the bus drive would have driven us through it. so we could only drive down the beach and through the water. after that we stopped at a souvenirshop, so that the bus could get a wash;-)
at 6 pm we arrived back at the holiday park. this time we had fish and chips for dinner.
the next day we had breakfast at 7.30 and left at about 8.30. in Pahia we had time to go souvenir-shopping. then we had a boat cruise, where we went through the other hole in the rock. the suits we had to wear looked very funny.
after that we made our way back to auckland. we finally arrived at 4.40pm at school.
all in all it was a very beautiful and great trip but we spend lots of time on the bus and i spoke too much german.
time to write something about my holiday program!
on friday, the 13th we had a beach BBQ with 2 other schools. the weather was not really good. it was very windy and down on the actual beach it was a lot warmer than at the place, where we had the BBQ. unfortunately noone wanted to go swimming with me. afterwards we still had quite a lot of time, so my host sister, one of my friends and i went to the local swimming-pool and to the movies afterwards. all in all it was a quite relaxed day.
on Tuesday, the 17th, 3 teachers took us out to clevedon on their cars. we met students from 2 other schools there and got seperated into two groups. our group did the flying fox and the rope swing first. the flying fox is similar to those slopes in the ‘climbing garden’ in paderborn and the rope swing is a big swing. both of these activities were quite fun. after that we went to the horse riding, which was a little bit boring for me, because we only did it very slow. we had lunch at the ranch and then we did the water confidence course. only very few people took part in it. there were many different acticities, where you had to get from one side to the other over the water. i took ages at my first station because i was so exhausted and the sun was burning on my back (of course i chose the most difficult one as the first:-D). my arms got very sore afterwards.
today, 23rd, we went to rainbow’s end, which is an amusement park. it is quite small and there are not so many scary rides. the roller-coaster with the loops was the only thing that looked at least a little bit scary, but actually it was not.
I will write a single article for the bay of islands trip!
All international and exchange students at my school, who are not sitting NCEA (the exams), got an offer for a holiday program.
-On friday 13th November we will play volleyball on the beach and have a barbecue. If the weather is good enough, we will also go swimming.
-On the 17th November we are going to go to Clevedon to do horse riding, flying fox, Rope Swing and water confidence.
-On the 23rd November we will visit rainbow’s end, which is an amusement park.
- From the 18th to the 20th November we will do a Bay of Islands Trip, which incluedes the Kawiti Glow worm caves, Waitangi Treaty grounds, Puketi forest, sandboarding, cape reinga, Bay of Islands cruise.
Today was my last day at school (even if i still have 1/4 of my whole stay in front of me).
We had first period and then assembly.
My first period was dance where we played a quiz. I don’t know whether my team won or not because we did not count the points properly. The main point is that the price was chocolate:-D
The assembly was for all year 12 students. We got the information about the procedure of the NZQA exams and after that we could go home. I stayed at school with some friends.
We walked around the school to take photos and then we went to Subway and McDonalds to eat something.
At the movies i changed our tickets for New Moon (we had tickets for the 19th November but we don’t have time on that day) to the 21st November.
They also told us at the movies that we are not allowed to go the movies in school uniform. So we went to Celina’s house to change our clothes (i had mine in my bag) and came ack to the movies.
We wanted to watch ‘My sisters keeper’. Unfortunately we went into the wrong theatre, what we recognized, when the movie started:-D. When we finally got into the right theatre, the movie was so sad that we cried a lot.
I got home at about 3.30pm, so I still had the whole afternoon which i spend with walking and writing emails.
My host family always sets up the christmas tree on the 1st November. That is kind of traditional for them. Of course it is not a real one, just a plastic one;-) i think it looks good with the butterflies, lights and purple flowers in it
But of course there is no christmas feeling yet:-D
